Kassel Performance started with a problem most shops could not solve: making BMW engines, electronics and immobilizer systems work correctly outside the factory configuration.
Today, that same systems-first approach supports everything from daily-driver service to nationally sourced engine builds, swaps, electronics work and high-output projects.
Built from BMW electronics outward
Jim Herrold and Gabe Kassel started Kassel Performance in 2014, focusing on EWS solutions and tuning the E36-generation DME range for E30 swaps, E36 projects and other custom BMW applications.
That early work established the principle that still guides the shop: understand the complete system before changing parts.
Jim: hardware, firmware and BMW control systems
Jim handles Kassel’s circuit-board repair and precision-soldering work for ECUs, DMEs, DDEs and instrument clusters. His work also includes developing and implementing software for supported current-generation immobilizer applications.
His specialties include E30 S54 wiring and software integration, along with true MSS54 CSL conversions performed with the correct memory chips, supporting hardware and firmware—not simply a file labeled “CSL.”
Matt: the complete vehicle and the shop floor
Matt Coyne joined Kassel in late 2018 and moved into the shop full-time in 2019. His arrival expanded the company from its electronics and swap roots into a complete BMW repair, performance and engine-building facility.
Matt has built hundreds of engines and completed projects for customers across the country. Jim and Matt now share ownership responsibilities, and Kassel Performance and Coyne Performance operate as one unified team.
Why the combination matters
Most shops can replace mechanical parts. Some can tune. Others repair electronics. Kassel brings those disciplines together, allowing the same team to diagnose the vehicle, repair or configure its control modules, calibrate the software, build the engine and validate the finished system.
A difficult BMW problem rarely stays inside one category. The engine, wiring, DME, immobilizer, transmission, fuel system and calibration all have to agree.
From daily drivers to serious builds
We work with customers who depend on their BMW every day and enthusiasts building specialized street, track and swap projects. Every vehicle receives the same fundamentals: honest diagnosis, careful workmanship, clear communication and a solution based on the actual car—not a generic parts list.
