Before ordering
What information should I send before ordering?
Send the VIN, chassis and model year, engine, DME or module part number, transmission, current software or tuning platform, complete hardware list, fuel, current faults or symptoms, and your intended use and goal. For a replacement module, include clear photos of both the original and replacement labels.
Is the listed price always the final project price?
The listed price covers the service or variant described on that product page. Hardware, software licenses, DME unlocks, shipping, installation, diagnosis, dyno time, damaged-module recovery, expanded programming, or a changed combination may require a separate quote.
Can I order first and confirm compatibility afterward?
For application-dependent tuning, retrofit, immobilizer, cloning, and module work, contact us first. A product being listed does not mean every vehicle, module, software version, or hardware combination is supported.
Custom tuning and Bend Calibration
How does Kassel Performance work with Bend Calibration?
Kassel Performance offers selected B58, S58, and S55 custom-calibration packages developed with Bend Calibration. Kassel reviews the vehicle and combination, coordinates the correct service path, and remains the customer-facing point of contact unless we tell you otherwise.
What fuel should I use?
Our standard tuning descriptions assume 93-octane pump fuel unless a listing or approved calibration plan states otherwise. Use the fuel the vehicle was calibrated for. Do not change fuel type, ethanol content strategy, or fueling hardware without confirming the calibration plan.
Which tuning platform will be used?
MHD, bootmod3, and EcuTek support varies by engine, DME generation, hardware, fueling strategy, and the features required. The best choice is application-specific; do not purchase a license until Kassel confirms the platform for your vehicle. Bend maintains a useful overview in Which Calibration Platform?
How does remote custom tuning work?
After the vehicle and hardware are approved, you will receive the applicable flashing and logging instructions. The process normally includes a starting calibration, correctly configured datalogs, review, and revisions. The vehicle must be mechanically sound, and logs must follow the requested channel list and test procedure so the data can be evaluated safely.
What information will I need for a custom calibration?
Be ready to provide the VIN and current software or calibration ID, vehicle and transmission details, engine and turbo configuration, complete intake, exhaust, cooling, ignition, fuel-system and sensor hardware, the fuel you will use, intended use, power goal, requested features, and any existing faults. Port-injection and auxiliary-controller setups require additional controller, injector, pressure-sensor and output details. Kassel will provide the current intake worksheet after the application is approved.
Will my DME need to be unlocked?
Possibly. Unlock requirements depend on the DME generation, production date, current software, prior tuning history, and selected platform. Some vehicles can be handled through the supported software workflow; others require a bench or third-party unlock. Do not buy an unlock or change the current tune until Kassel confirms the correct path.
What do calibration, revision, map, and mode mean?
A calibration or tune is the software file developed for the approved vehicle combination. A revision is an updated version produced after reviewing data or an approved change. A map or mode is a selectable behavior within a supported calibration, such as a reduced-torque, full-torque, fuel-specific, track, or valet setting. The number and purpose of modes vary by platform and application.
Does the car need to be mechanically ready before tuning?
Yes. Calibration cannot repair weak batteries, inaccurate sensors, exhaust or vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, poor grounds, wiring faults, or an improperly installed wideband. Complete known mechanical and electrical repairs first, use quality parts, and disclose any unresolved symptom before the first calibration is built.
What should I expect during a single-fuel remote tune?
The exact checklist depends on the ECU and combination, but the process can include wide-open-throttle, cruise, ignition, boost-control, variable-valve-timing, cold-start, idle, and deceleration review. Not every vehicle needs every step, and advanced features or troubleshooting outside the approved scope can require additional work.
How should I collect and submit datalogs?
Use only the channels and test requested for that revision. Keep the log focused around the behavior being reviewed, hold the requested operating condition steadily, begin with at least half a tank of the approved fuel, and submit the file in the existing project email thread with a clear filename that identifies the customer, revision, and test. Perform any loaded test only in a safe, legal environment or on an appropriate dyno or closed course.
What should I do if the vehicle hits boost cut, fuel cut, or another limit?
Stop the test and send the log showing the event if one was captured. Do not repeatedly force the vehicle into the cut. Describe what happened, the conditions, and any warning lights or faults so the data can be reviewed before another attempt.
Do I need internet access or a live remote session while logging?
Normally, no. Logs can usually be recorded locally and submitted afterward. A supervised remote-computer session is used only when Kassel or Bend specifically schedules one for live diagnosis, setup, or calibration work. Only install the approved support application and share a session code directly with the authorized contact for that appointment.
How quickly are tuning revisions completed?
Turnaround depends on receiving complete vehicle information, a mechanically ready vehicle, and usable logs. Submit requested data promptly and keep the project moving while the combination is fresh. Travel, race support, dyno work, weekends, and incomplete or unsafe data can extend the schedule.
How long are Bend tuning credits and the active tuning window valid?
For Bend-backed remote calibration work, the supplied general policy states that tuning credits are valid for 60 days from purchase and that the active tuning window is 30 days from review of the first log. Submit the vehicle information and logs promptly. Work requested after the active window, or after a hardware or fuel change, is treated as retuning or a new scope.
Are remote tuning purchases refundable?
Application-dependent tuning and calibration work is non-refundable under the supplied Bend remote-tuning policy. Confirm the vehicle, hardware, software platform, fuel, schedule, and your ability to follow the logging process before purchasing.
What happens if I change hardware or fuel after tuning?
Stop and contact Kassel before operating the vehicle aggressively. Turbo, injector, pump, intake, exhaust, sensor, ethanol, or engine changes can alter airflow, fueling, load, and safety limits. A revision, retune, or new calibration scope may be required; post-window retuning is a separate service.
Can a dealer or software update affect my tune?
Yes. A dealer programming session or platform software change can overwrite the calibration, change the vehicle's software level, or relock the DME. Tell the servicing shop that the vehicle is modified and contact Kassel before authorizing programming. Tuning can also affect manufacturer or third-party warranty coverage; the vehicle owner is responsible for confirming that impact.
Why does ethanol reduce fuel-system headroom?
Ethanol-blended fuel can support greater knock resistance, but it requires more fuel volume for the same operating condition. The safe ethanol content and power level therefore depend on injector, high-pressure pump, low-pressure supply, port-injection hardware, and the actual data from the vehicle. The calibration may need to limit output as the fuel system approaches its capacity.
Do replacement or upgraded injectors need separate coding?
They may. Injector installation, cylinder-specific compensation or flow values, adaptations, and calibration are separate tasks. Where BMW procedure requires injector coding or an adaptation reset, the tune does not replace that work. Confirm the injector part number and required service procedure before installation.
What must be checked before calibrating port injection?
The approved controller, firmware, calibration file, injector configuration, wiring, power and ground, CAN communication, pressure sensing, fuel plumbing, and any auxiliary outputs must all match the agreed build. Communication and sensor data should be verified at idle before any loaded test. Do not perform a power pull if the controller reports a fault, communication is missing, fuel pressure is unstable, or the installation has not passed leak and wiring checks.
Which spark plugs and gap should I use?
Use the plug, gap, and service interval assigned to your exact engine, fuel, hardware, and power level. Fresh, correctly installed plugs are a good starting point for custom tuning, but there is no universal modified-BMW gap. If the vehicle misfires during a test, lift immediately and send the log and fault information rather than repeatedly testing or assuming the plug is the only cause.
Can I flash a calibration before all major hardware is installed?
Only with explicit approval. Minor airflow parts may sometimes be compatible with the planned file, but turbos, injectors, high-pressure pumps, port-injection systems, sensors, and controller integrations can be fundamental to how the calibration operates. Follow the installation and flashing order supplied for the project.
Are horsepower figures guaranteed?
No. Published figures are general planning ranges, not guarantees. Results vary with the individual vehicle, dyno, weather, fuel quality, drivetrain, mechanical condition, hardware efficiency, calibration goal, and the reliability margin selected.
Does more power reduce reliability margin?
Any material increase in cylinder pressure, torque, speed, or heat increases mechanical stress. A calibration can manage risk intelligently, but it cannot make a modified engine identical to stock or guarantee that a component will not fail. Maintenance, condition, cooling, fuel quality, and honest goals matter.
Can tuning fix an existing no-start, wiring problem, or failed prior tune?
Sometimes Kassel and Bend can help, but ordinary calibration work is not a substitute for diagnosis. A previous tune, incomplete build, no-start, wiring fault, or complex input/output problem must be verified methodically and may be billed as separate troubleshooting. Success cannot be guaranteed, and resolving an inherited problem can cost more than calibrating a properly prepared combination from the start.
What does a flex-fuel calibration require?
A true flex-fuel setup requires an approved ethanol-content sensor and integration method, compatible software, correct wiring and fuel plumbing, and a calibration designed to respond to measured ethanol content. Do not assume that adding ethanol alone creates a flex-fuel vehicle. Review Bend's Flex Fuel Kit FAQs before ordering hardware.
Why is fuel filtration discussed for ethanol setups?
Bend recommends appropriate filtration for supported ethanol-fuel combinations to reduce contamination risk to the injectors. Filter selection, installation, service interval, and compatibility depend on the exact kit and vehicle. Follow the current kit instructions and inspect any service indicator rather than treating one interval as universal.
Where can I read the Bend platform guides?
These are Bend's living documents and can change as platforms, software, and hardware evolve. Kassel must still approve the exact combination before parts or licenses are purchased.
Do you provide emissions-delete or defeat tuning?
No. Emissions-system removal, monitoring defeat, or related calibration work is not included in Kassel's listed tuning packages.
Programming, coding, and module services
Will my service be remote, mail-in, or performed in person?
The method depends on the vehicle, module family, software level, available diagnostic access, and whether original data can still be read. Contact Kassel with the VIN and module details before removing or shipping anything.
What is usually required for remote programming?
Requirements vary, but a supported Windows computer, stable internet connection, approved diagnostic interface, and a properly sized vehicle power supply may be required. ENET, K+DCAN, ICOM, or J2534 support is application-specific. Do not begin flashing or connect unfamiliar equipment until Kassel confirms the workflow.
Can a used DME, transmission controller, or head unit be installed directly?
Often not. Used modules can retain VIN, immobilizer, component-protection, coding, or vehicle-order data from the donor vehicle. The original and replacement part numbers, hardware families, and readable data must be reviewed before cloning, resetting, virginizing, or programming is promised.
What is the difference between cloning, an ISN reset, and coding?
Cloning transfers supported data from an original module to a compatible replacement. An ISN-related service addresses immobilizer or drivetrain authorization data for a supported workflow. Coding configures supported vehicle or module functions. They solve different problems and are not automatically interchangeable.
Is EWS work required for an engine swap?
If the end user or installer does not have the ability to complete the required EWS synchronization, the appropriate EWS service is mandatory for the swap package. The exact method depends on the DME, chassis, immobilizer generation, and retained vehicle systems.
Can I purchase several coding options together?
Yes, where the DME and vehicle support them. Compatible coding services are displayed as separate selectable cart lines so you can choose more than one without creating hundreds of artificial variant combinations. Application review still determines what can be completed together.
Why do security-related services require ownership information?
Key, immobilizer, ISN, cloning, and unlock work can affect vehicle security and authorization systems. Kassel may require customer identification, VIN information, and proof of ownership before accepting or completing the service.
Does purchasing programming guarantee that a failed module can be recovered?
No. Water damage, electrical damage, prior programming attempts, corrupted or unreadable memory, incompatible hardware, and vehicle-side faults can change the service path. Diagnostic work, data recovery, replacement hardware, and installation are separate unless the listing explicitly includes them.
